E4 Channel Ident Brief

  1. Expressions of interest are requested to produce a 30 – 60 second stop motion animation, channel ident for E4. The idents are to be broadcast between weekday and evening programmes. The idents need to reflect the style, branding and attitude of E4. In addition to the longer 30 – 60 second idents a shorter (5 second) E Sting needs to be produced. The content for both pieces of work need to appear cohesive but also use original material.

    Who is your client?

How many animations do you need to produce?

How long does each animation need to be?

What does 'cohesive' mean in this context?
List 10 shows that are popular on E4.

Last Day!

As a matter of urgency I need everyone to have finished your learning outcomes 1 and 2 and uploaded it to your blog. We are having an examiner in to check your work. Here is a link to the checklist on LO1; https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1b0UY98IcT_rKEDifbQggSQ0DppDQd3M6lcAuffRVuX8&pli=1 make sure you include dates of key animation techniques. For LO2 You need to write a proposal for your idea. The proposal template is on http://www.newmediateacher.blogspot.com/. Please upload this to your blog - you can simply cut and paste from a word document. You all need to produce a mind map of ideas for your ident. In addition you also need to produce two of the following: A storyboard which explains what is going to happen in your animation. Character sketches from all angles. A mood board to which visually demonstrates the look you are trying to create. LO3 you need to upload your video to your blog. LO4: Give others feedback and write your evaluation (see checklist above and blog for more information). Thanks very much and I look forward to marking it soon! We will be starting a new Unit Next Week, so make a special effort to be there please!

Pitch Perfect

An elevator pitch is an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project.
The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch should be possible to deliver in the time span of an elevator ride, meaning in a maximum of 30 seconds and in 130 words or fewer.
It must include the following:
1.What problem is it you are trying to solve? (In this case it’s in the brief).
2.How are you going to solve it? What’s your idea?
3.What are the benefits of your idea over all the other ideas?
4.Make sure it’s clear and there are no questions?
1.In your pairs write down your ideas.
2.Write a short pitch of 130 words.
3.Practice it. Does it cover the 4 essential steps of an elevator pitch. Does it have the problem, your solution, the benefits and does it leave the person not having any questions?
4.Make improvements.
5.Pitch it!

TASK: Idea Development

  • Produce a mind map which shows lots of ideas of how you can answer the creative brief you have been given. Upload an image of the mind map to your blog. Write, 'E4 ident,' in the middle of the sheet of plain paper and let your ideas flow!
  • Write up your best idea into a blog post and explain it fully. Give as much detail as possible.

Fine Tuning Ideas

Today is all about generating and fine tuning your ideas, for your stop-motion animation, E4 channel idents. To make sure you are producing the best idea, work through the following:
  1. Produce mind maps of at least 3 ideas which might answer the brief you have been given.
    Select your best idea.
  2. If relevent produce a series of character sketches, which show how the main characters look from each side.
  3. If relevent produce a mood board which illustrates, the 'feel' or 'mood' of the ident that you are going to produce.
  4. Write a proposal (see post below called, 'Writing a proposal for your chanel ident')

Produce a storyboard for the animation (the storyboard must also show evidence that you have considered movement, frames per second, soundtrack, sound effect and script if appropriate).
If relevent produce drawings of the set that you intend to make.
All pre production work, needs to be evidensed on your blog, so scan, photograph, post or upload, your pre production work.

*If you are unsure about what pre production material you need to produce, then please discuss your idea with me and I can suggest the most relevent work for your project. Each idea will be different but you do need to produce a substantial amount of material.

Experiment 1: Chroma Keying Background in I Stop Motion

We have some fantastic new software to create our stop motion animations on. It has some great new features. I would like you to experiment with the new software try the chroma keying feature as demonstrated above.

Tilt Shift Function on New Stop Motion Software

Still Moving from mustardcuffins on Vimeo.

This video makes brilliant use of the tilt shift effect. The new software that we have for stop motion can do a similar effect. If you feel inspired you could achieve something similar. Why not give it a try!

Tilt Shift is a popular photographic illusion that manipulates the depth of field on long-shots in a manner to fool the brain into thinking it is looking at miniature-scale models.

So you have viewed the video's, now answer these questions:
  1. What kind of effect does the 'tilt shift effect' create?
  2. What type of camera angles best suite the 'Tilt Shift effect'?
  3. If you were to use the 'tilt shift' effect around college, list 3 filming locations which you think would be effective.
HERE'S HOW TO DO IT

Simple Stop Motion

I thought there was quite interesting use of stop motion animation in a recent edition of Channel 4's 'Will My Crash Diet Kill Me.' You might like to check it out. Unfortunately you will have to watch a few ad's first.

Claymation: Evaluation

Upload your claymation animation into a new blog post and write an Evaluation of Claymation Animation. Firstly explain the process of claymation animation?

What are the strengths of using Claymation animation? What did it enable you to create?

What are the limitations of claymation? (Draw upon your own experiences), was their anything that plasticine couldn’t do?

Critically evaluate (strengths and weaknesses) of claymation animation with other animation techniques you have experienced (eg Object Animation, Cut Out animation, pixilation, etc)

Flick Books

Turning your Flickbooks into a Video Loop
Using a video camera, tripod and Stop Motion pro capture each hand drawn image.
Start a new project in Final Cut Pro; make sure the settings are ‘DV Pal and Standard 48 Hz.’
You are now going to make a video loop of your clip. Select the original video clip, copy it, and paste it at the end of the original clip. So you have two copies of the same clip.
Select the pasted section and set it to play backwards. You do this by pressing ‘ctrl,’ and clicking on the clip. Then click on ‘speed duration,’ and click the ‘reverse clip,’ box.
Now you have a loop of one forward and one backward repetition.
To make a longer loop, copy both clips and paste them at the end of the first loop. Repeat this until the loop is as long as you want.

Pixilation Animation

I think this Pixilation video is pretty exciting:
